Enterovirus Strikes!

November 17, 2014 by Laura Kubicki Leave a Comment

So we Kubickis were going about our crazy, happy and relatively carefree lives, when…

SMACK!  Right between the eyes – literally.  Enterovirus strikes.

Enterovirus.  That ugly, microscopic, mean little respiratory bug that ‘somehow’ appeared in the US and sent more than a few poor kids to the hospital with horrible wheezing issues – especially if they were asthmatic.  There were reports in the news of children flooding hospitals across the country in numbers that surprised us (and then along came Ebola and our focus shifted but that’s another story).

Well, Enterovirus was reported in NC too, and took off once school was back in session.  So we redoubled our efforts throwing all daily clothes into the laundry, hand washing and hand gelling to the max, making sure we ate healthy, and got plenty of rest, and stayed hydrated, and kept fingers out of our mouths, and got our flu shots…but it was of no use.

Sure enough – it…got…us:o(!

Jack first…marked by a headache and sore throat followed by four days of high, stubborn, fevers, especially at night…followed by about 8-10 days of fatigue, respiratory and sinus symptoms.  Yuck.

And, like you no doubt do when your little ones are suffering, I found myself up every night,  administering ibuprofen and acetaminophen on schedule, refilling humidifiers and drinking water, fluffing hot pillows and sheets, holding hands, stroking damp hair, retrieving stuffed friends, singing lullabies, and praying for a quick end to this for all of us…

But the end was not to be, because in case you haven’t heard, Enterovirus is…quite contagious.  Quite.  So after Jack, Joseph followed (along with more sleep deprived nights).  And friends from school reported their kids home with the same symptoms.   And then Jason and I got it (thankfully minus the fever, but with rubber cement post nasal drip, combined with a red hot throat).

So now its been two weeks and we’re just now getting over it, dragging our energy depleted selves through the days…hence I haven’t had the ability or the energy for a blog update!!

Grrr.  Just when we’re getting this thing going too!

But like my mother always says…if at first you don’t succeed…try try again!

So here I sit with my Ginger Tea in hand, trying to melt the ever oozing and nauseating goo trickling down the back of my throat, but armed with my first night of full, undisturbed sleep in two weeks, hopping back into the saddle.  Can’t keep a good woman down after all, and we’ve got a lot to do with the holidays here.

So thanks for hanging in there with me!  I sure missed ya!  All of yas!

Here’s to your health!!!

Welcome to Laura’s Choice!

October 21, 2014 by Laura Kubicki Leave a Comment

Boy Energy!

Hi Everyone!  Welcome to Laura’s Choice!  I’m so thrilled to be able to finally ‘launch’ this thing!  Those of you who already know me know that “Laura’s Choice” was born years ago, a small nugget of an idea, which is finally taking the shape of a new lifestyle blog (to crowd the already crowded blog marketplace) with what I hope grows into a standout, meaningful, fun, unexpected, real life discussion about life with our families today.

Fun stuff. Weird stuff. Meaningful stuff. Everyday stuff.  Oh and food stuff – I love to cook and entertain and come up with relatively healthy food choices to fuel my family each day (as you can see by this picture, we need LOTS of fuel around here)!  I thought I’d share some of those too.

God knows life itself has changed dramatically since we were kids, and even more so since our folks grew up. There are a lot of critics out there. People who say life today isn’t what it should be.  Others say it’s way better.  Perhaps it is and isn’t.  But that’s not what the focus of my thinking is.  I think we all have the power to CHOOSE.  Choose what each day will be.  Choose what kind of life and lifestyle we are going to provide our kiddos.  Our husbands.  Our families, friends, and communities.  Ourselves.  And then go do it!

It can be a challenge to be sure, (and no ones life is without it’s bad days) but one thing I know for certain is every day choices can lead to an overall happy life – if that’s your goal.  And it’s definitely mine.

I want this (hopefully) 100 year journey to be filled with as much happiness for me and my family and frankly all of us, as I can muster.  So that’s Laura’s Choice.  Talking with one another about choices that work to make our lives the best they can be. Lifestyle, Food, and Other are my starting points.  We’ll just see where it goes from there.

So that’s it.  Laura’s Choice? Live Happy!

Life’s A Beach

October 16, 2014 by Laura Kubicki Leave a Comment

Life’s A Beach!

We just got back from a glorious long weekend at our favorite beach – Emerald Isle, NC.  I’ve been going there since I was 6.  Yep, SIX.  And I still love it.  It’s my all time favorite beach.

Let me tell you a little more about it.

There’s the sound side where we kyack and canoe right next to pods of dolphins so close you can reach out and touch them.  There’s the harvesting of wild crabs and fish right off the end of the pier, which we catch, name, and throw back as my children can’t stand the thought of ‘taking them away from their families :o).  We paddle to Shell Island to collect…well, shells… and watch breath taking sunsets.  And the feeding of the birds is always great fun – especially if like me, you love a Mary Poppins throw back.

Then there’s the ocean.  What else needs to be said?  Looking out across the emerald waters of the Crystal Coast really has a way of putting life in perspective.  It’s so majestic, so sparkling, magical almost.  We’ve seen wild skates (like stingrays), schools of fish, and dolphins swimming through the waters.  We take long walks down miles of soft, sandy beaches, jump waves, boogie board, relax and read under an umbrella.  We’ve seen wild sea turtles on the beach at night searching for a place to lay their eggs (they are HUGE I can tell you – and you can hear their heavy breathing even before you see them clearly in the dark as they work to drag themselves across the sand with their flippers).  Of course I love to visit the plethora of cute beachy shops, and the kiddos love to feed the snapping turtles in the lagoon, play minigolf. We have go cart races, visit an historic civil war fort in Atlantic Beach just up the way called Fort Macon, where the real Black Beard the Pirate’s shipwreck has been discovered!  And of course I can’t resist whipping up some delicious seafood dishes to go with a prefectly delightful bottle of vino chilling back at the pad.

So now you know some of what we do and why we love Emerald Isle…

Now don’t get me wrong…I’m not saying it’s the only beach where there are these things to do.  There are many others I’ve enjoyed as well. I’ve  been lucky enough to see the French Rivieria, the roiling pacific waters off California’s magical coast, the tranquil, turquoise, Caribbean, Maine’s rocky, craggy, shores and even jumped waves in Maui and Kauai, Hawaii.  My advice? If you get the chance, go there. Go to all of them and then some if you can!  Life’s for the living – right????

But even with all those wonderful places, Emerald Isle has my heart. And I continue to return as often as I am able.

So anyway, you get my drift (no pun intended!) about my trips to EI and this time was no different. I loved every minute – except one, which I’ll tell you about later.  Keep in mind it’s October… and we were still able to spend every beautiful afternoon hanging out by the ocean – jumping waves, boogie boarding, throwing the football, and watching the graceful, pterodactyl like Pelicans skim across the waves with the tips of their great wings never touching the ever returning swells of the Atlantic.  It was sunny and right about 80 degrees.  No humidity.  A light breeze.  Ahhhh!

And I guess the thing is…we ALL felt it. One big family ahhhhhhh.

We laughed more, we played more, we felt life more – and even though it was just 3 days, we all came home refreshed.  Our home felt so comfortable again -and our own beds, our missed pets, and even our familiar responsibilities somehow felt better than they had before.  And we were better able to recognize all our blessings, which makes one feel…well…content.  And when I’m content, I’m happy.

And Jason and I realized again how important it is for our family to take the time, however we can, to reconnect the four of us, because in the end, what’s really more important or leads to more happiness than your family?

Ok so now remember there was 1 thing I didn’t love about this trip?  Here goes.  When we got to our friends condo (those wonderful friends who are always so willing to share with us!),  we found the normally functioning fridge – dead.  Unsuspectingly, I opened the door to put away milk and a couple other staple items we grabbed at the local Food Lion, and was greeted by a swarm of fruit flies and a smell that would kill a cat.  You should have seen the green/grey fuzz growing on the items left in the freezer and fridge!  YUCK!  Normally I refrain from cleaning refrigerators on vacations, but this time there was no choice.

So in true Kubicki (say Q-bicky) fashion, we teamed up and tossed and/or recycled all the rotten leftover condiments, eggs, cold cuts, juices, butters, frozen (or should I say unfrozen) chicken , put little bowls of wine (needed to open a bottle anyway at this point :o) )around the kitchen to attract and drown the swarm, cleaned and disinfected the fridge, threw a bag of ice into the freezer along with our luke warm milk, yoghurt, and eggs, lit a candle to rid the place of the horrific stink, and called it a night!  Phew!  Literally…

But you know what?  Even during the great fridge extravaganza we all just enjoyed being together and frankly, I’m sure we’ll enjoy a few more laughing family moments when we think back to the way that refrigeration unit smelled.

In fact, we already have.

So I guess what I’m saying is I learned again that banking some future happy moments and memories is the good that often comes from the unexpected, not so good instances that pop up for all of us day to day.  And I was thinking about how maybe I should apply that approach to life everyday and not just recognize it during vacation…

Have any great family get away stories of your own?  I’d love to hear them!

And thanks so much for spending some time with me and my story choice today!  Come back soon!

Reflections on September 11

September 11, 2014 by Laura Kubicki Leave a Comment

It’s Sept 11.  An infamous day for America.  A day when we reflect on the innocent people we lost and the family and friends who lost them.

So this morning, as I was cleaning up the kitchen, I was listening somberly to the names of the people who lost their lives on that terrible day.  And I teared up thinking about the precious time those poor victims lost with their loved ones through no fault of their own.  And that made me think for the umpteenth time, of how much my family means to me and how lucky I am to have them.

Then as it so often does, my mind wandered to thoughts about what if something happened to me, and how all the hours my kiddos are away with school and activities now really reduce how much we get to really be together.  And I missed them.  Which led me to think again how important it really is for me to make the most of the time I am blessed to have them with me. Today.  Because you never know about tomorrow…

Which, let me to think of our daily, 15 minute, out of zone, car ride to and from school.  Let me tell you.  Some of those rides could be better.  For we do not experience only great, angelic, harmonious drives to school and back each day.  Some days, the stars are aligned, and we do.  But some days, well…we don’t.

Some days, my boisterous boys fight, pick on, and irritate each other and me to no end as I’m desperately trying to drive them safely to the drop off point.  I try to stay calm and ask them to settle down.  No luck.  I try again.  Still no luck.  Then I holler, threaten, take away privileges, plead.  I’ve stopped the car to lecture, yell, reason with them, dole out punishments…and we all end up feeling bad.  Not my goal.

So as I was thinking about 9/11 and all this family stuff I began to wonder what other tactic I might employ to disrupt stressful anxious car behavior and get us back on track to happy.

Books on tape (or CD actually) that I actively listened to with my boys, was my answer.  I had a couple we received as gifts, but I never really used them a lot before.  What a dummy I am.

It’s not TV.  It’s not rock music.  And it’s not more video gaming. It’s brain development, language arts experience, entertainment and family time as we listen and laugh together.  After one particularly stressful driving day, I ordered three new CD books for the car.  The next time tempers began to flair, I pulled out my surprise and just turned it on.  My boys didn’t listen at first, but when they noticed me listening, they settled down and began to enjoy WITH me!  Ahh.  Peace and harmony again restored.  I think my boys watching me listen to the story made them enjoy it more.  I don’t think they felt the “plugged in” feeling that sometimes comes when we need to…well…plug them into something!

And it felt good.  Similar to the bedtime story time we love to share each night.  And we got in more happy family time – today.  And I adored my children and they adored me.  And it was good for all of us and we were…happy.  Which of course is my goal for us each day.

So…I told my Mom about this. Many of you know, my Mom is a veteran elementary school teacher.  She said this.  “Isn’t that remarkable.  You redirected their energy to something positive – got out in front of their behavior and turned it into something else.  Good for you.  So many people yell and punish children (like me) when their behavior turns, but here you’ve done quite the opposite and it’s benefitting all of you.”  Yep.  I’m 44 and still like that “Mom Approval” myself.

Oh and hey, I know it won’t work every day or last forever, but Halloween’s coming so I got The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything for the car with the book to follow along, and I’ll bring out in October.  And maybe, just maybe, if I keep it seasonal and fresh, and don’t overdo it, I’ll have another parenting tool to pull out of my Mommy Bag from time to time to manage our car rides and turn more of them into a family experience we can all enjoy.

I love figuring things out like that.  Finding more ways to enjoy each other as much as we can in the little moments each and every day.  Because I can’t control things in the world that could happen to us like the horrific events of 9/11, but I can squeeze out every single family minute I can to love, enjoy, laugh and just be together.

BTW, if you have any great car ride ideas, I’d love to hear from you!  Til then, happy driving.

That’s Laura’s Choice today.
